Introducing….Ça Roule

Midlands born, London-based DJ and producer Ça Roule is releasing his latest single ‘Dance In The Dark’ on Punch Up Records, At Swim Ltd.’s electronic music label.

‘Dance In The Dark’ is available exclusively via Bandcamp from 1st October, and will go on general release on 15th October.

Hi Ça Roule! How’s it going?

“Hello guys. It’s going well thanks, better now that we’re finally FREE! But yeah, all good, just got back from a Festival, feeling terrible, so life is actually feeling pretty normal for the first time in a long time, which is a welcome change.”

Where did you grow up?

“I am from the barren wastes of Lincoln, or as I’d tell people growing up “Near Nottingham”.

Are you from a musical family?

“I suppose so, my Dad spent the first 30 years of his life trying to make it in a band as a drummer. They actually did alright, they managed to sign to Polydor Records and had a shot at going big time, but for one reason or another the band ended up splitting up and nothing else really happened for him after that unfortunately. But yeah, I spent my early years in school with my dad’s drum solo’s as my alarm clock for school. It was as good as it sounds.”

As a DJ and producer, who would you say are your biggest influences?

“Well, Two DJ/Producers I’ve loved for ages are these fellas from New Zealand, Chaos in the CBD. I first heard ‘ 78 to Stanley Bay’ around 2014 and I fell in love with it. Became obsessed with them and then ended up seeing them in Newcastle in probably 2017. Their set blew me away. It was mesmerising to watch two people operate as seemingly one brain. Other than these boys, I’ve got mad love and respect for guys like Mall Grab, DJ Boring, Bicep, Jamie XX.”

What was your first gig/club night?

“My first gig was back in 2018, at a club called MSA in Newcastle. I was promoting for this event company called Ape-X. They had a night that focused on Disco, Funk and Soul and I was all about it. I sent the head man a mix and he rated it, gave me a shot, and it must have gone alright because they let me come back a few times which was awesome. I really enjoyed playing there.”

‘Dance In The Dark’ is coming out in October! Tell us what inspired you to make the track.

“To be honest with you, I’m not sure there was a thing that I was focusing on at the time, like inspiration. But I knew that I wanted to make a trippy, tribal sounding tune that people could kind of just get lost in. I love those tracks in the club that make people stop talking mid conversation. And I guess I wanted it to be one that caught people attention, and made then drift off into a trance of dance.”

Is that typical of how you make music?

“Yeah I’d say it is. It took a little while for me to work out a rhythm with making music. But I’ve found that the way I work best is by sitting down and trying to picture the time, and setting that I can imagine the track being played, before I’ve even started it. Sounds kind of weird when I say it like that, but I guess it’s like trying to work out how I’m feeling and then working from there.”

Are you looking forward to performing live again?

“HOLY FUCK absolutely. Although, now it feels like its been so long that it’s gonna be just like the first time all over again, and that’s making me nervous as hell, haha.”

If you could play at any club, which one would you choose?

“Offffttt that’s a hard question. I mean playing in Fabric, room 1, would be something ridiculous for me, purely because of the amount of time I’ve spent on the other side of that little cage just imagining what it’s like to be the DJ. But there’s so many places I’d love to play.”

If you could go B2B with any DJ, living or dead, who would you choose?

“Okay, I thought the last question was hard. Shit…… ermm, okay, well I’m gonna go with someone that I think is just a pure legend of a person, not just a DJ and that’s big Carl Cox. He just seems like a bloke that is genuinely lovely. I’ve seen a few documentaries with him in and he comes across super humble, and like a lot of fun. I think playing a set with him would be an unreal experience.”

Last question: Twiglets or Quavers?

“Quavers, everyday. Twiglets need burning. They’re such an average crisp.”
